Alphacrucis Law Lecture Series will give lawyers and the general community the opportunity to hear top legal scholars to address critical issues in Australia and the world. Some examples of topics discussed will include constitutional law, legal philosophy, corporate law, law and religion, and international law.
We are delighted to announce that Emeritus Professor Gabriël A. Moens AM will be the first ever speaker at the Alphacrucis Law Lecture Series. The title of his lecture will be “Critical Thinking and The Rule of Law”.

Professor Moens’s lecture will be preceded by a short lecture by Professor Augusto Zimmermann, Foundation Dean of Law at Alphacrucis, prolific author and former WA Law Reform Commissioner.
Professor Zimmermann will address the topic of “The Rule of Law as a Culture of Legality”, which is the subject of his doctoral thesis (PhD) successfully submitted to Monash University Faculty of Law twenty years ago.
Opening the evening is Keith Francis, a barrister who practises with particular expertise in the areas of Succession Law, Equity, and Family Law. He has served as a law academic teaching Remedies, Procedure, Equity & Trusts, and has regularly chaired the Wills & Estates Intensive programs for UNSW.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS:

Professor Gabriël A. Moens AM, JD (Leuven), LLM (Northwestern), PhD (Sydney), GCEd (Queensland), MBA (Murdoch), MAppL (COL), FCIArb, CIArb, FAIM, FCL, FAALis Emeritus Professor of Law, The University of Queensland. He served as Pro Vice Chancellor, Dean and Professor of Law, Murdoch University. He also served as Head, Graduate School of Law, The University of Notre Dame Australia; Garrick Professor of Law, The University of Queensland; and Professor of Law, Curtin University. In 1999, Professor Moens received the Australian Award for University Teaching in Law and Legal Studies. In 2003, the Prime Minister of Australia awarded him the Australian Centenary Medal for services to education. He was named the “International Alumnus of the Year” by the Pritzker Law School of Northwestern University, Chicago in 2019. In June 2019 he was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for services to the law and higher education. Professor Moens is a Membre Titulaire, International Academy of Comparative Law, Paris; a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Management (WA); a Fellow of the College of Law; a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Law; and a Fellow of the Australian Centre for International Commercial Arbitration. Professor Augusto Zimmermann PhD (Mon.), LLB summa cum laude, LLB (Hon.), CIArb, DipEd is Foundation Dean and Professor of Law at Alphacrucis University College, Parramatta. He is also a former Law Reform Commissioner with the Law Reform Commission of Western Australia (2012-2017) and a former Associate Dean (Research) and Postgraduate Research Director at Murdoch University’s School of Law. He is also the Founder and President of the Western Australian Legal Theory Association (WALTA), a former Vice-President of the Australasian Society of Legal Philosophy (ASLP), an Elected Fellow at the International Academy for the Study of the Jurisprudence of the Family (IASJF), and Editor-in-Chief of the Western Australian Jurist law journal. A prolific writer and the author of numerous articles and academic books, Professor Zimmermann was awarded the 2012 Vice Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Research, and two School Dean’s Research Awards, in 2010 and 2011. Professor Zimmermann is generally recognised as a fierce advocate for the Rule of Law, contributing with numerous articles on the subject, including for The Legal Doctrines of the Rule of Law and the Legal State (Springer, 2014), a book edited by the President of the American Bar Association (ABA) that explores the development of both the civil law and the common law conceptions of the Rule of Law. He has been included, together with only twelve other Australian academics and policy experts, in ‘Policy Experts’ – the Heritage Foundation’s directory for locating knowledgeable authorities and leading policy institutes actively involved in a broad range of public policy issues, both in the United States and worldwide.
